Helping people realise their strengths and reach their goals brings enormous rewards. Whether you are supporting someone to learn how to make a cup of tea so they don't have to rely on others or supporting a person into getting a job where they feel truly valued, there is nothing quite like the feeling you get when you help others reach their goals. Even if you haven't worked in the support work field before, the chances are your life experiences will be valuable to our organisation. All our staff receive training - so you bring your life experience, we'll provide the training and the rewards.
VARIETY OF ROLES
Because our clients' needs vary widely, so do the roles of our staff. Some support workers support people who live independently in the community while others might work in houses, day programmes or day centres which all have levels of staffing based on client needs.
This means there is a variety of vocational options for potential and existing staff. For example, on any given day you'll find a support worker supporting a person:
- to take steps towards goals which can range from learning to make breakfast themselves, getting a bus into town without becoming anxious or learning how to use a computer
- to get into training or employment
- with their personal cares
- to take a holiday or go on organised camps, and
- to do their share of household chores.
Our support staff document the work they do with clients so progress can be measured and they can rely on their team for support and advice.
CHALLENGES
Working for Pact can be challenging - some of our clients have high and complex needs, some are non-verbal and some exhibit challenging behaviours. But regardless of which part of Pact our staff work in, they find supporting others to lead fulfilling lives is very rewarding. Our staff surveys always rate working with clients and watching their achievements as the best part of the job.
TRAINING AND CAREER DEVELOPMENT
New staff will be given training in "core competencies" - the things you need to know to do the job, as well as other training and development as it is needed. Pact also subsidises the National Certificate – Mental Health Level 4 for staff who are identified to do this training.
